For urban late-night disturbances, you can’t beat the adaptive technology of the Sound+Sleep Sound Machine. This gadget features 10 different sound landscapes to muffle (take attention away from) your worst urban nightmares, including traffic, emergency sirens, fireworks, and irritating neighbors. This also makes a great meditation tool for anyone who lives within a less-than-perfect retreat zone.
Adaptive Sound Technologies has since put together a similar package at a fraction of the original size. Standing at only 2″ x 2″ the LectroFan Micro2 is geared for the open road. It features a directional speaker, Bluetooth streaming, a speakerphone, and is TWS (True Wireless Stereo) compatible. Pairing individually is easy with the Micro 2, but if you want to pair two speakers together for stereo sound, you will need to delete all previous individual pairings, turn on both speakers, double-click the play/pause of one unit, and locate the “LectroFan Micro2+” from your list of Bluetooth options.
A single Micro2 is good at muffling sounds, but this is a personal sound machine, so it works best when positioned right next to you. As the distance increases, the effect decreases, but that can be useful in shared situations like working in an office or sleeping in a dorm room.
The Micro2 can be paired with another Micro2 for greater effect, and this left and right configuration certainly improves sound quality for streaming but also improves noise masking during sleep and meditation. The larger plug-in units may have more volume, but pairing two Micro2s makes up for this. When using two speakers you can also help guide the sound where you want it by pivoting the speaker tops in their cradle to satisfy just about any angle you’re looking for.
Operation
The Micro2 comes with the standard buttons: a directional left and right, pause/play, and volume up and down. Past reviews mention an issue with the USB-C port losing its charging capabilities. This is located on the backside of the unit and has since been reinforced in its second reiteration to keep it working reliably through multiple charge cycles. We did not experience any problems during our month of testing.
Battery
Anytime you choose a wireless unit over a plug-in, there is always the question of battery life. And despite their micro size and bantamweight, these speakers can last an entire work week next to your bedside without a recharge. That is eight hours a night for 5 nights for a total of 40 hours. Using the Bluetooth function for streaming or speakerphone requires more power, so for that configuration, each 2.5-hour charge cycle will last you up to 20 hours. Either option creates some respectable numbers, making the Micro2 not much of a compromise over their plug-in counterparts.
The Sounds
The on/off button resides in the center of the Micro2 with the Bluetooth pairing on the left and sleep sound operation on the right (“Zzz”). I am not a ‘fan’ of the fan sounds usually, but a lot of people sleep soundly using them. However, whether you prefer the ocean, a waterfall, an industrial fan, a desk fan, or a dedicated frequency (pink, white, or brown), you will find at least something appealing that will bring some relief to the racket that is keeping you up at night.
There are 12 sounds in all, five of these are various sounds of fans, four are frequencies (one mimics a waterfall), and two are oceans. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done. The Micro2 is a great travel companion, particularly if you are used to a quiet work area or bedroom and are headed to a bustling destination, like Miami or Las Vegas.
This little sound machine works well for such a compact size, and at $35 on Amazon, it is a worthy consideration to help you sleep (and meditate) better.
