Hair can be unmanageable, unkempt, and positively frustrating at times. To make matters worse, there are a lot of products out there that promise to rein these problems under control, but fail the moment their pomade leaves a greasy stain on the back of your couch.
I love the smell of gel in the morning, but I hate when it does not allow me to forget about it by my first cup of coffee. I’m talking about those sticky formulas that make themselves far too known by their flowery scent, glue-like hold, and inability to loosen it up if the moment calls for it.
And then there’s Hair Situation.
The first thing I noticed during my trials of the four hair gels offered by Hair Situation, is that none of them are what I’d consider to be a one-way road. In other words, whether you use their Mr. Active (Styling Glue), Mr. Cool (Wet Look Gel), or Mr. Groomed (Sculpting Pomade), they offer the opportunity to sweep out their initial grip, and leave you with some fairly clean and natural looking hair (albeit with a slightly textured feel and hold).
This is something I look for in a gel, because if I hit it hard at a club, and then come home too tired to shower before bed, I don’t like going to sleep with a glue head. Even with the Hair Situation’s Mr. Cool, which is designed to leave your hair with a slick shiny wet look, it is still fairly easy to brush out, and hit the pillow with some bed ready locks. You can then reactivate it in the morning with a little water, and your good to go for another night on the town.
I am a big fan of the chunky textured look, and there are not a lot of pomades that can do this without weighing your hair down with a lot of excess product. This is especially true if you got a pretty long mane to tame. Mr. Groomed is fairly light, offers a great hold, and pulls the hair together to create a thick texture, increased body, and noticeable volume. This has became my favorite formula for everyday use.
My other favorite for daily control is Mr. Dapper, which leaves a nice matte finish to your hair. It is simple, clean, and easy to use. Nothing tricky; nothing fancy, just a good medium hold without the mess and glue. However, do keep in mind that this is still a pretty strong formula, so a dab will go a long way with medium to short hair.
Once the sun dips low and the city lights turn on, my preference switches to either the Mr. Cool (wet look) or Mr. Active (extra hold). While these both offer the ability to spike or slick as much as I like, it is not a greasy formula that makes your head feel like a fly trap. These both go on very clean and light, and won’t leave behind a trail of white residue shame everywhere you go.
What is your hair situation? Well, that’s kind of personal, but whether you choose to be slick, soft, dapper. or just well-groomed—one of these black tubes is likely to get things under control for you. And I’m not just a reviewer; I’m also a client.
