5 Tips to Stay Motivated for Your Workouts

A lot of guys mean well. Sure, we’d like to be a lean slab of sirloin, but settle for a little creme filling in the middle because… well; it’s just easier that way. If you’re looking for some motivation to get into the gym more often, try these 5 (easy to do) tips.

Take Off Your Shirt, Stand in Front of a Mirror, and Take a Picture-
Don’t avoid mirrors or cameras when you’re out of shape, because, quite frankly, these can be a great source of motivation. As in Alcoholics Anonymous, the first step is acceptance. Don’t hide from your body, accept it, and do something about it to make yourself feel better! In addition, by keeping a visual record of your condition, it will be easier to see your improvements over the coming weeks.

Maintain Realistic Goals
Guys are impatient, and if we don’t start seeing bulging biceps by the second workout, we drink a beer instead. Don’t go into the gym with expectations beyond the next two weeks. It is easier to uphold your motivation when you avoid overwhelming yourself with impossible to reach goals. A Fitbit Zip is a great way to maintain your small goals when out and about on the town, and away from the gym.

Have Fun
While easier said than done, men don’t do things very long that they don’t enjoy. Find an activity that you like to do, and it may become something you look forward to. Having a good playlist of your favorite music can make exercise fun, and you should always do the exercises you like least, first, as this ends each workout on a positive note. Another way to get in the spirit is to join a team (workout, sport, race, etc.). Men are particularly motivated by team spirit, and the camaraderie will go along ways towards making these types of activity’s fun!

Break Out of Your Mold
A lot of guys avoid regular workouts, because they don’t see themselves as the typical “gym guy.” We’re talking about your health and well-being; not how many times you were chosen last for a game of dodgeball in grade school. Break out of your mold, and reinvent yourself as the guy who wants to enjoy the spoils of a strong body.

Rewards Yourself
Yeah, all this cheerleader talk only goes so far. Eventually, you’re going to need to reward yourself with something tangible, like a movie, new pair of shoes, or Mosler RaptorGT (or perhaps just the hot girl standing next to it).
