The New iPhone 5: Thinner, More Powerful, and in Stores Next Week

Today, the iPhone 5 was finally unveiled through Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, and while it has some stellar features, the Samsung Galaxy should still hold its ground as its closest competition. The biggest news for the upgrade is that it will be taller (4-inch diagonal screen) and thinner (0.3 inches), which means it can now display five days on its calendar, browse the web easier, while maintaining an even smaller profile than the Galaxy. The newest iPhone will also be capable of connecting to an LTE network, and will take another step towards the late, Steve Jobs, grand plan, to replace the mobile tablet and laptop.

The iPhone 5 has a fantastic display, capable of achieving 1136 X 640 resolution, and will also come with brand new operating software. It has an 8 megapixel camera on the back, a 1.2 on the front, and newly redesigned headphones, called earPods (as they can mold themselves to the shape of your ear). The iPhone can feature up to 64 GB memory, and its battery will last eight hours using 3G talk mode, LTE internet, and up to 10 hours on wifi and video playback. Priced at $199 for the base model (16 GB), it is around twice the cost of the Samsung Galaxy, which was released back in May.

iPhone 5 Versus the Samsung Galaxy
In a fight between Superman and Batman, we think it would end in a draw, and we feel the same way about the iPhone versus the Samsung Galaxy. Both phones offer LTE network capabilities, and high-definition picture quality, although the Galaxy is a bit bigger with its 4.8-inches diagonal screen and 1280 X 720 resolution. Both phones offer similar battery life. The iPhone 5 eclipses the internal storage space of the Galaxy by a full 32 gigabytes (64GB total). However, the addition of a 32GB storage card will even things up for the Galaxy, and the iPhone’s memory cannot be expanded.

Anticipation of the new iPhone has damaged sales for the previous model over the past couple months. Which brings us to the conclusion that you better bring your sleeping bag and alarm clock to your favorite mobile phone store Thursday evening, as Apple will start taking orders this Friday for all Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint carriers (among others).
